Buying jewelry is always a small holiday. Someone prepares for it for a long time, gradually forming the image of "their" jewelry and carefully choosing the manufacturer and seller. Well, someone just goes into a jewelry store in the mood and pampers himself (or another person) with unexpected joy. In this and in another case, it is important to be satisfied and not be disappointed with the acquisition. For this we have prepared several recommendations on how to buy jewelry.
And just want to give the main advice. If you like the jewelry, if you feel that it is “your”, be sure to buy it.
The cost of jewelry in general form consists of the cost of:
precious metal plus stone insert
work on its manufacture and
markups for the brand, if you buy a branded item
In expensive, sophisticated and exclusive jewelry, it is work and the brand that can make up the bulk of the price. What is the conclusion? You buy jewelry, and do not invest money in precious metals and stones. Unfortunately, you can quickly sell a piece of jewelry only at the price of precious metal scrap (The Village journalist’s experience in selling the ring). Stones without certificates are likely to be very cheap - unless, of course, they are not unique natural gems or large diamonds of the highest quality. A more adequate price can be obtained only in a thrift shop (in the hope that there is an amateur) and in pawn shops, where there are qualified appraisers. Therefore, when buying jewelry should proceed more from the aesthetic appeal, rather than from considerations of investment.
According to the Law on the Protection of Consumer Rights, jewelry of good quality cannot be returned (for more details, see our article on regulatory regulation of jewelry turnover). If the decoration did not suit you in size or was simply "disliked", then you can legally be refused in returning it. True, there are two exceptions:
1) if the purchase was made remotely (in the online store), then you have at least 7 days to return the jewelry without giving a reason (for more details, see the article on how to buy jewelry in online stores).
2) some jewelry chains and stores voluntarily set a period during which you can return the jewelry. When buying it is worth asking the seller about it.
Many buyers are specifically looking for jewelry with a certain gem. Someone believes in the magical or healing properties of this stone, others select the insert “according to the horoscope”. And all of us at the sight of the word “pomegranate” or “turquoise” on the product tag immediately imagine the mineral extracted in the bowels of the earth, which has been processed, cut and inserted into the ringlet, which we are trying on right now. However, in practice, most stones go through additional processing steps, which are called “refining”. Most often, this is heating or irradiation, as a result of which the color of the stone can change drastically or intensify (for more details on the refinement of precious stones). For example, experts estimate the amount of turquoise imitations in the market from 80 to 95% (for more details, see the article on turquoise mining).
A lot of stones that fall into retail are not natural and are “synthesized” (grown with the preservation of the structure of natural stone) in production (for more information about synthetic stones). A clear advantage of all these manipulations are a more attractive appearance of products, and an acceptable price. The downside is the fact that manufacturers and retailers do not inform us about how the insert was obtained. There is no information on the tag about how the stone was “improved”. In the best case, it can be stated that it is synthetic (by the way, it will soon indicate that the unnatural origin of the stone on the tags is bound by the law).
The way out in this situation we see the following. If the natural origin of the stone in the decoration is extremely important to you, then it is better to buy it separately and order the manufacture of the decoration in the workshop. You can also buy the finished product directly from the master who made it (for example, at the jewelry exhibition). The rest of the buyers, we would advise to pay attention to the aesthetic properties of the entire product, including the insert - and buy, if you like.
Unfortunately, the level of knowledge of sellers of jewelry stores about metals, stones and jewelry technology is often at a low level. Blame and staff turnover, and the fact that management does not always attach importance to the importance of consultation and full disclosure of information about the product. If the seller was friendly and helped to consider all that interested you - this is not bad. Otherwise, you better rely on yourself, trying at least at a basic level to understand jewelry terms and carefully study the product tag.
